Common questions before joining HathaYog
Whether you are exploring Classical Hatha Yoga for the first time or looking to continue your practice, these answers will help you understand the programs, preparation, registration and policies.
What is Classical Hatha Yoga?
Classical Hatha Yoga is an authentic and ancient system of yoga that has been preserved in its purest form for thousands of years. At HathaYog, these practices are taught exactly as they were learned during the teacher’s intensive training at Sadhguru Gurukulam.
The primary purpose of Classical Hatha Yoga is to create balance and harmony within the body, mind and energy system. Through a carefully designed combination of yogic postures (asanas), cleansing processes, breath-based practices and other traditional methods, it supports physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance and inner wellbeing.
Unlike many modern forms of yoga that primarily focus on exercise or flexibility, Classical Hatha Yoga is a complete science for inner transformation. Every practice is taught with precision, preserving the integrity and traditional methodology of this timeless yogic system.
Whether your goal is better health, increased vitality, stress management, weight balance or spiritual growth, Classical Hatha Yoga provides practical tools that can become lifelong companions for wellbeing.
Getting Started
Is Yoga suitable for beginners?
Yes.
Classical Hatha Yoga is suitable for people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of physical fitness. Most HathaYog programs are designed so that even someone who has never practiced yoga before can learn safely and progressively.
The yogic system contains practices appropriate for different ages, abilities and life situations. During registration, we help you choose the most suitable program based on your needs and experience.
Do I need prior yoga experience?
No. Most HathaYog programs are designed for complete beginners.
Certain advanced offerings may have specific eligibility requirements, which will be mentioned in the program details.
Do I need to complete Inner Engineering or Shambhavi Mahamudra before learning Classical Hatha Yoga?
No.
Inner Engineering or Shambhavi Mahamudra is not mandatory for learning Classical Hatha Yoga programs offered at HathaYog.
Programs such as Upa-Yoga, Surya Shakti, Surya Kriya, Angamardana, Yogasanas, Bhuta Shuddhi, Bhastrika Kriya, Shanmukhi Mudra and other Classical Hatha Yoga offerings can be learned independently, provided the eligibility criteria for the respective program are met.
What is the minimum age?
Unless otherwise specified, most programs are open to participants 14 years and above.
Separate offerings are available for children wherever applicable.
Are there programs for kids?
Yes.
HathaYog offers selected programs specially designed for children, taking into account their age, physical development and ability to learn. These programs help improve strength, flexibility, balance, focus, coordination and overall wellbeing in a fun and engaging manner.
While most regular Classical Hatha Yoga programs are open to participants 14 years and above, children below this age can participate in dedicated kids’ programs wherever available.
If you’re unsure which program is appropriate for your child, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to guide you based on their age and needs.
Can I attend a trial class?
Generally, no.
Classical Hatha Yoga is taught through structured programs rather than drop-in classes. Since every session builds upon the previous one, trial classes are generally not offered.
If you would like to understand the approach before enrolling, you are welcome to attend Pravesha, our introductory session, or schedule a consultation with the teacher.
Are these fitness classes?
No. These are Classical Hatha Yoga programs taught in their traditional form.
While participants often experience improvements in flexibility, strength, stamina and overall wellbeing, the purpose goes beyond physical fitness.
Programs & Learning
What is the difference between Workshops, Nityam and Abhyasa?
Workshops / Antaranga: Designed to help you learn a specific Classical Hatha Yoga practice.
Nityam: A structured, guided practice space where participants progressively learn and deepen their practice through regular sessions.
Abhyasa: Guided practice and refinement for participants who have already learned an eligible practice through a workshop.
Can I join midway through Nityam?
It depends on your previous learning and the current practice circle.
Since Nityam follows a structured progression, participants generally join at the beginning of a new circle. However, if you have already learned the required practices or complete the necessary catch-up sessions, joining an ongoing circle may be possible at the teacher’s discretion.
Can I repeat a workshop?
Yes.
Many participants choose to repeat workshops to deepen their understanding, refine their practice and receive further corrections.
Repeat participant privileges may be available for selected programs.
Can I learn multiple practices at the same time?
It depends on the practices involved.
Some practices complement each other, while others are best learned sequentially. The teacher will recommend the most appropriate learning path based on your existing practices and experience.
Can I practice on my own after learning?
Yes. Workshop-based programs are designed to be practiced independently after learning.
Participants who would like continued guidance may join Abhyasa for regular corrections and refinement.
Will I receive a certificate?
Unless specifically mentioned for a particular program, HathaYog programs focus on learning and practice rather than certification.
Health & Preparation
Can Yoga help me lose weight?
Yes, although the approach is different from conventional fitness programs.
Yogic practices help bring balance and awareness to the body. As this awareness develops, your body naturally begins to seek what is appropriate for it—including how much and what to eat. Rather than relying on willpower, restrictive diets or constant self-control, yoga helps create an internal balance that supports healthier choices naturally.
In addition, certain Classical Hatha Yoga practices are more physically demanding and can significantly improve strength, stamina, flexibility and overall fitness.
- Upa-Yoga – Gentle movements to activate joints, muscles and energy.
- Surya Shakti – Builds strength, flexibility and vitality.
- Angamardana – An intense bodyweight practice that develops power, endurance and physical fitness.
- Yogasanas – Supports balance, stability and overall wellbeing while deepening one’s inner experience.
If your primary goal is weight management, we can recommend the most appropriate practice based on your age, health condition and lifestyle.
Can I join if I am overweight, inflexible or have never exercised?
Absolutely.
You do not need to be flexible or physically fit before joining. Practices are taught progressively according to your capacity.
Are these programs safe if I have a medical condition?
Most people can participate safely.
However, recent surgeries, pregnancy, injuries or certain medical conditions may require modifications or may make particular practices unsuitable. Please inform the teacher before registering.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement. Preferably cotton.
Avoid jeans, belts or restrictive clothing.
Should I come on an empty stomach?
Yes. Unless instructed otherwise:
- 4 hours after a full meal
- 2½ hours after a light meal
- 1½ hours after beverages other than water
What should I bring?
Generally, please bring:
